My First Post!

Hi Everyone!  Thanks for checking out my new Blog!

I’m just getting started with the world of blogging, so please bear with me as I get this one up and running.  I’ll leave with a few tidbits of my upcoming summer:

This summer I will be biking from Providence, RI to Half Moon Bay, CA in order to help raise awareness about the affordable housing issues in our country.

It is becoming harder and harder for working families to afford decent living standards in this country, and something has to be done about it.  Over the course of the summer, we stop every 6 or 7 days in order to work on different homes across the country.  This is a great service, and we spend our time wisely, but the real work is in building awareness.  Each trip that goes across the country has 30 young people, educating each other about the issues, making a SCENE wherever we go (imagine 30 kids, all wearing the exact same jersey, riding bikes into your town..), and spreading this awareness to other people.  That’s the real goal, raising awareness, and empowering others to service.

So for this trip, each of us (I ride with a group of about 30 others, all between 18 and 25) must raise $4,000 dollars, which is distributed to the different organizations that we stay and work with over the summer, as well as through competitive grant applications, and a $500 donation of the riders’ choice, (mine will probably go to the Pioneer Valley or Boston Habitat for Humanity chapter).  We also are allowed to sort through the grants, and decide as a group where we would like to make a donation. It’s a cool way for all of us to get involved in actively distributing the money that we’ve raised.

Please check out the other parts of my blog, and feel free to donate to my trip.  You can learn more about Bike & Build by visiting my personal page, as well as the organization’s main website:
